Welcome to the second grade at Bloomfield Elementary School. The second grade teachers are Mrs. Linda Mattox, Mrs. Laura McIntosh, Mrs. Jamie Norman, and Mrs. Laura Rose. Second grade is an important step in a young student’s academic career, and the second grade teachers look forward to helping prepare your child for a successful academic year.
The second grade curriculum is aligned with the second grade Indiana Academic Standards. Reading focuses on comprehension and fluency. Students are given weekly tests as well as assignments to assess comprehension skills and reading fluency. In addition, the Accelerated Reading Program is available to students who wish to participate in earning reading points through the computerized reading comprehension program. Second grade strives hard to help your child develop a genuine love of reading!
Math concepts focus on computation, problem solving, mental math, and reasoning. By the end of the second grade, your child will have learned a wide range of math skills, which will be used throughout elementary school. Science, social studies, and health are integrated into the daily curriculum. Special classroom activities include learning about butterflies and zoo animals. Throughout the year, second grade provides several opportunities for field trips such as the Indianapolis Zoo, Spring Mill and McCormick’s Creek State Parks.
A normal student day includes classroom academic instruction time, grade level lunch, recess, and activity time. Activities include library, art, music, and physical education. Second grade teachers update Harmony weekly with homework agendas, grades, and important school information. Parents are encouraged to log in to Harmony and keep current on their child’s educational activities throughout the second grade year.
